This week they tried a couple of new things with Spencer. As I mentioned, he has been on the 2 liter high flow for his breathing. He has responded very well to it and his oxygen has been moving back towards 21%, which is really exciting to see. He typically hovers between 26-28%.
They have also been working on moving the temp in his incubator down towards room temperature air. He has adapted very well (wearing clothes and wrapping in a swaddle blanket helps). If he continues to do well, they are thinking of moving him to an open air crib in the next week or so.
Spencer is up to 36 ml every 3 hours for his feeds. He is just starting to experiment with breast/bottle feedings and so far it seems to be going well.
There has been a little hiccup this week. Yesterday Spencer had two episodes where he his oxygen level dropped really low - down into the 50's (the goal is to keep him between 90-100, and Spencer usually doesn't drop below 75). What was even more unnerving was that he didn't come back up right away. They tried a variety of things to help - repositioning, propping him up, rubbing his back, etc....but he just had a hard time recovering After it happened the second time, they did a chest X-ray and ran a bunch of labs to see what was going on. His chest X-ray came back clear and the labs show no infection. This is great news, but doesn't really help explain what's going on.
Over night the episodes continued and today there was even more of them. This has been unnerving but probably not that unexpected for a baby born at such a young gestation. Really, to this point, we have lucked out on how well Spencer has done. The last two days have been a good, strong reminder to us that God is in charge of this story and we just have to wait and trust.

Today they tried giving Spencer a diuretic to flush some of the fluid out of his body. This seems to have helped and hopefully will continue to stabilize him. We appreciate your prayers for Spencer and will keep you updated as this develops!
