8-29-14 Spencer update

Lots of exciting things to report!

First of all - I asked you to pray, and you did. And guess what that means - things happened! The very next day after posting about Spencer's breathing, I got to the hospital and the doctor had taken him off oxygen. We were nervous about how he would do, especially during his feeds, which is when he has to suck, swallow and breathe at the same time. We are very happy to report that Spencer is doing great and has now been off of oxygen for over 48 hours!!

Spencer is now 38 weeks and 7 lb 2 oz.

He is up to 5 bottles per day (out of 8 feeds). The other three feeds are done through feeding tube. Matt and I have been dutifully working on learning how to give Spencer a bottle. It's more challenging than you might think. But today we both successfully feed Spencer an entire bottle! And I even got a burp out of him =)

Things are starting to be set in motion to move Spencer towards discharge day. Weaning him off his meds, getting him off oxygen, visits from the pediatrician. It's all very exciting. It creates hope. Hope feels a little bit dangerous, because you can be let down. But, even if the end day is delayed, we know it will come. So we choose to get excited and hope for that day.

Also, we continue to look for God in this experience. What does He want us doing, thinking, saying? We try to focus on making the most of this opportunity, even if it is a tough situation and we are tired.

So many of you have blessed us and helped us through this experience. Thank you for your prayers and support. Each text, phone call, prayer, call or letter means so much to us!

One of the NICU nurses sent me this link and it is just so true, I had to share.
